Q: What are export controls and why are they important?

Export controls are regulations put in place by governments to limit the export of certain goods, technologies, and information for reasons of national security, foreign policy, or human rights. Software can be subject to export controls if it contains encryption or other technologies that are considered sensitive or if it is being exported to certain countries or end-users that are under trade sanctions.

The primary agency responsible for enforcing export controls on software in the United States is the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) within the Department of Commerce. The BIS maintains a list of controlled items, known as the Commerce Control List (CCL), which includes various types of software that are subject to export controls. These include, but are not limited to, software that uses encryption above a certain strength, software that can be used for military or intelligence applications, and software that is designed to be used in the development of weapons of mass destruction.

When exporting software, companies may be required to obtain licenses or other approvals from the BIS or other government agencies, and they may be subject to penalties if they fail to comply with export control regulations.

In addition, there are other restrictions on software exports such as EU dual-use regulation and other international sanctions can apply. It's important for software companies to understand the different laws and regulations that may apply to their products and make sure they are in compliance.

Q:  What are royalties for App Creators?

Software royalties are fees that are paid to the creators or owners of software for the right to use that software. In general, software royalties are based on a percentage of revenue or a fixed amount for each unit sold.

There are a few different ways that software royalties can be structured, such as:

  • Perpetual royalties: With this type of royalty, the user pays a one-time fee to use the software, and they can use the software indefinitely.
  • Time-based royalties: With this type of royalty, the user pays a fee to use the software for a certain period of time (e.g., annually or monthly) and the user must renew the license to continue using the software.
  • Usage-based royalties: With this type of royalty, the user pays a fee based on how much the software is used (e.g., per transaction, per user, per CPU).
  • Enterprise software royalties: An enterprise software generally have a perpetual license agreement, where the user pays a one-time license fee to use the software on specific terms (e.g. a number of users, a number of CPUs, a number of servers, etc.), also the user pays annual maintenance fees which cover technical support, software updates and upgrades.
Software developers and vendors use royalties as a way to generate revenue from their products and to cover the costs associated with developing, distributing, and supporting the software. In addition, royalties may help incentivize software companies to continue to innovate and improve their products.

However, if you believe that your app requires a larger file size, exceptions can be made with prior approval from Ansys. If you require an exception to the size limit, you can contact the Ansys store team at store@ansys.com for assistance. Q: What licensing technology is used for paid apps?

Ansys employs a proprietary version of the Flexera license system to manage licensing for ACT apps on the Ansys store (we are working on supporting more types of apps). When a customer purchases a paid app, a text-based license file is automatically generated using the Host ID and Host Name of the license server or the engineer's computer. The license file is then sent to the customer via email after the sale has been completed. This licensing system ensures that only authorized users have access to the paid app and helps to protect against piracy and unauthorized distribution. If you have any questions or concerns about licensing your app on the Ansys store, you can contact the Ansys Store Team at store@ansys.com for assistance.

Q: Can we sell or distribute our app outside of the Ansys Store?

If you have developed an app that you would like to distribute outside of the Ansys Store, it is important to note that you are free to do so for free apps. Additionally, if you are selling your app on the Ansys store, you may also be interested in offering special discounts to customers. Ensuring the validity of a customer's license is an important part of managing your app on the Ansys store. To check the validity of a license, there are a few options available to you. Alternatively, you can contact the Ansys Store Team at store@ansys.com and request verification of the license. They can help you confirm that the license is valid and provide you with any necessary information to ensure that your app is being used in compliance with the terms of the license agreement.
